Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why does the fire engine show up when I called for Medical Emergencies?

A. All of our fire engines have paramedics and paramedic equipment on board.  Sometimes an engine can get to your home/business faster than a squad or Advanced Life Support Unit from the stations they are dispatched from, on Springdale rd and Galbraith rd.

Three out of the five stations do not have squads stationed at them.  In these less populated areas you will get faster medical treatment by having the closest engine company respond.  In all medical emergencies, time is critical.

Q.  Will I receive a bill for an emergency medical run if I am taken to the hospital?

A.  A Bill is sent to your insurance company.  The insurance companies pay between 80-90% of the bill.    The 10-20% of the remaining bill is written off for residents of Colerain Township.  The residents will not receive a bill for the service.  The remainder of the bill is only sent to non-residents.    For further details click here

Q.  Why do the fire engines block more than one lane of traffic during an auto accident on the highway?

A.  We block the immediate area that the accident occurred at.  We will block an additional lane of traffic to provide a safe area for our crews to operate and be able to provide medical care to the patient without placing people in undue hazardous conditions.  Each year many police, fire, and construction workers are injured or killed by drivers that lose control of their vehicles while passing accident scenes.  Its an inconvenience but it keeps all those working he scene safer and protects the patients.

Q.  Is it normal for me to see fire department personnel in the grocery store while on duty?

A. Most of our personnel work 24 hours at a time.  That means all of their meals must be prepared and consumed while on shift at the fire house.  Our fire stations have 4-13 people on shift at anytime.  In order to accommodate meals, each person working contributes to the overall purchase of the days meals.  The individual doing the shopping them returns to the station and lets those that know how to cook do their thing.  We find out quickly who can and cannot cook.  We keep all units in service at all times.  Shopping does not affect our response or service to the public.
